Wednesday 3rd September 2003 - Monthly Meeting at The Birches
GUESTS: LYNNE PARDOE AND IRENE CUNLIFFE
S.T.A.R.T. (SOUND THERAPY AND REFLEX TRAINING)
We were pleased to welcome Lynne to our Monthly Meeting at The Birches to talk
about a therapeutic programme that addresses developmental delay. It was during
Lynne's career as a teacher that she became interested in helping pupils with
dyslexia and other learning difficulties. Following extensive research, Lynne
trained to become a Neuro Developmental Therapist; an occupation she is quite
clearly committed to.
As soon as Lynne began to talk she had a captive audience! She explained how the
primitive and postural reflexes of infancy can impact learning ability and
behaviour when they remain active beyond the normal period of development.
The developing brain should integrate these reflexes during the early years of life.
Lynne explained how birth trauma and early experiences can inhibit this process
resulting in developmental delays and behavioural difficulties. Children living with
this problem may find themselves unable to benefit from normal teaching methods and
may remain immature in other aspects of their lives.
Lynne demonstrated the assessments and remedial exercises on a brave WASGAP member
and told us of the positive results being achieved in local schools where this
programme has already been implemented. Irene Cunliffe, the Action Plus Co-ordinator
at South Bromsgrove High School, talked enthusiastically about the achievements she
herself has experienced through implementing the programme into her work.
The evening ended far too soon but the buzz of conversation as we said our goodbyes
conveyed the excitement felt by every person in the room.
